Services

At the West Midlands Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre we have a team of healthcare professionals which includes consultants, registrars, physiotherapists, dietitians, social worker, psychologist and specialist nurses. All the team provide inpatient and outpatient care for adults over the age of 16 who have CF.

Many people find it helpful to come and look around the centre and meet the team before transferring.  This visit will provide you with the opportunity to ask any questions or discuss concerns that you may have before you transfer. If you feel you would like to do this contact the C.F nurses at the Children's hospital and they will be able to arrange this for you.  Alternatively we could show you around the ward and introduce you to some of the staff when you attend your first outpatient appointment. You are also welcome to call and discuss any issues you may have by phoning the numbers of the C.F team provided.

Outpatients

What should I expect when I go to the outpatient clinic?

The CF clinics are held in the outpatient department of the Adult CF centre which is based ward 26. On arrival at the clinic you will need to book in at the reception desk. In order to keep our records up to date please inform the receptionist of any change of address, telephone numbers and next of kin. This is important information for us to have if we need to contact you.

You will then be allocated a clinic room where the nurse will come and see you to measure your height, weight and oxygen saturation levels. Whilst in the privacy of this room spirometry (blowing tests) and sputum specimens will also be obtained. You will then be asked to remain in this room for the duration of your visit. The CF team i.e. specialist nurse, dietician, physiotherapist, social worker and doctor will come and review you in this room.

The first time you attend the outpatient clinic you may be here for a couple of hours. This is in order to allow the time for the consultant and CF team to assess you and go through your current treatments. The doctor may also want to organise some routine investigations such as an x-ray and blood test.

When you have finished in clinic please hand your appointment slip to the receptionist. A follow on appointment will then be sent to you by post.

Appointments in the Adult CF Centre

It is important to arrive for your appointment on time unless there is an unavoidable delay. Please telephone clinic reception on 0121 424 1693 if this happens to let us know as we do realise that many of our patients travel quite a distance.  Patients will be seen by order of appointment time and not arrival time.

How do I re-arrange or cancel my appointment?

Please remember to telephone and let us know if you are unable to attend your hospital appointment, as clinics can be quite full and therefore another patient would be able to use your clinic slot.

To cancel an appointment/re-arrange an appointment please contact Joanne Watson - Clinic Receptionist on 0121 424 1693.  Alternatively you can e-mail us on:- cancel.opd@heartofengland.nhs.uk

Can I leave the ward?

If you wish to leave the ward, it is essential for safety reasons to ask the nurse in charge, informing them of where you are going and at what time you expect to return. If you are going out for the evening you need to return to the ward by 10.30pm and be in your own room by 11.00pm. This is to enable night medication to be administered in accordance with hospital policy and allow time for you to settle before the ward lights are turned out.

Am I allowed to have contact with other CF patients?

You are encouraged not to have contact with other CF patients in clinic, in hospital or socially. If you do, you can potentially put yourself at risk of acquiring new infections as well as putting others at risk of acquiring your infection. This may cause your health to deteriorate.
