We offer holistic nutritional advice and information to all inpatients and outpatients with Cystic Fibrosis seen at the West Midlands Adult Cystic Fibrosis Unit.

We aim to help educate patients in all aspects of their nutritional needs for CF. We provide dietary advice and support in the form of individual patient assessments and will tailor nutritional treatment plans to help achieve a good nutritional status and weight. This can involve guidance on a high calorie diet, nutritional supplements and also tube feeding if appropriate.

We assess pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy and provide advice on managing the correct dose of enzymes in relation to food intake. In addition, we monitor & advise on fat soluble vitamin therapy and salt.

Our service provides excellent management for patients who have CF related diabetes and we work alongside the CF Diabetes Specialist Nurse to achieve this. For optimum blood sugar control we will advise on dietary modification often in conjunction with insulin treatment and blood sugar monitoring including techniques such as continuous glucose monitoring. We have numerous educational resources to help patients learn about carbohydrate counting which can enhance diabetic control.

We can also provide nutritional advice for female patients wishing to conceive and offer antenatal advice to help achieve optimal nutrition at this time.

In the near future we are hoping to develop some interactive web-based learning tools that patients should be able to access via our homepage, so watch this space.

The CF Dietetic Service can be contacted Monday to Friday on 0121 424 1796 or via switchboard on 0121 424 2000 bleep 2425/2965/2944

Nutrition Support Nurses

We have good links with the Nutrition Support Sisters who are involved in the care of patients who undertake tube feeding. They offer expertise in all types of feeding tubes and will counsel patients who are considering starting tube feeding or gastrostomy placement. They offer an inpatient service and an aftercare service in addition to arranging home visits with a nursing representative from the home delivery service.

The Nutrition Support Nurses can be contacted directly on 0121 424 1435 or via switchboard on 0121 424 2000, page number 2253.

Food Service

From a catering point of view, we work closely with the hospital catering department and are proud to have a dedicated menu for the CF inpatients in addition to the hospital menu. Our Lite Bites menu includes options such as cooked breakfasts, toasted sandwiches, pizza, pasta, curry and a range of desserts.

The food service times are as follows – Breakfast 08.00 -10.00, Lunch 13.00, and Evening Meal 18.00. The housekeepers also provide a trolley service of hot drinks, snacks and supplements during the day.

All inpatient rooms are equipped with a small fridge which can be used for storing certain food and drink items that you may wish to have. These items must be brought in and stored according to the Ward Food Policy.
