Treatments

There is currently no cure for CF, although advances in treatment methods have helped to improve quality of life and longevity for CF sufferers. The different ways CF can be treated are:

Physiotherapy to combat the build up of mucus and clear the airways, reducing infection and lung damage
Exercise to improve physical bulk and strength, preventing lung deterioration
Medication to clear mucus off the lungs, which can be administered in various ways: inhaled into the lungs using nebulisers, taken orally, or taken intravenously.
Nutrition to help digest food and maintain body weight, good nutrition has a positive effect on lung function

Lung Transplantation is another option available for CF patients who have advanced lung disease. It offers a better quality of life for patients who are severely ill and have tried all medical treatment available. However, it is important to note that transplantation does not remove all concern as there are still risks associated, such as rejection and infection.
