Code of Conduct

In order to maintain a pleasant and harmonious atmosphere that is considerate to all people, the senior sisters, ward staff and CF team have agreed to this code of conduct. We expect patients to abide by this code of conduct.

  • Patients will be woken by 8.00am, enabling treatments to be administered and completed on time. Waking up later does not allow enough time for your full treatment regimen to be carried out. This causes inconvenience to all professionals and may compromise your treatments.
  • Treatments (especially physiotherapy) and ward rounds often start from 8.30am. If a patient is unavailable/asleep at this time then they are likely to miss out on this essential part of their treatment.
  • Consideration and respect for the well being of other patients is expected at all times.
  • Noise levels should be kept to a minimum out of consideration for others.
  • A strict policy of no alcohol, illegal drugs and smoking is operated on the ward.
  • If patients wish to leave the ward it is essential for safety reasons to ask the nurse in charge. You need to inform them when you are leaving the ward and also on return to the ward.
  • Patients are advised that when they leave the hospital grounds they take full responsibility for their own safety.
  • Patients going out for the evening need to return to the ward by 10.30pm and be in their own room by 11pm. This is to enable night medication to be administered in accordance with hospital policy and allow time for patients to settle before the ward lights are turned out.
  • Family or friends are allowed to stay overnight in special circumstances only. This must be discussed with the CF team and the nurse in charge. If permission is given for family or friends to stay overnight a relative's room is available on ward 26.
  • Patients are requested not to sit or stand at or around the nurse's station as this may compromise patient confidentiality.
  • Patients, relatives and visitors are not allowed in the ward kitchen or the drug administration room.
  • Disruptive, abusive or rude behaviour towards patients, staff or relatives from patients, relatives and visitors will not be tolerated. In particular the use of abusive language to members of staff is unacceptable. In line with the Trust's Violence and Aggression Policy the following steps will be taken if any incidence of this nature should occur.
  1. Following any incident the immediate manager or department head (or their deputy) will explain to the patient that his/her behaviour is unacceptable and explain the expected standards that must be observed in the future.
  2. If the behaviour continues, the responsible manager or clinician will give an     informal warning about the possible consequences of any further repetition.
  3. Failure to stop this behaviour will result in a formal written warning of the consequences of such behaviour ("Yellow Card").
  4. Failure to comply will result in exclusion from the Trust via a final warning letter ("Red Card").
  • The use of mobile phones is allowed in patient rooms. However, they should not be used during treatment times and ward rounds.
  • Patients will be usually asked to vacate their room by midday at the latest on the day of discharge. This is to enable the room to be cleaned and made ready for the next patient.
  • You are encouraged not to have contact with other CF patients in clinic, in hospital or socially. If you do, you can potentially put yourself at risk of acquiring new infections as well as putting others at risk of acquiring your infection. This may cause your health to deteriorate.
  • The hospital is not responsible for loss or damage to personal belongings and equipment brought in from home.
